Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 34.9 km² (13.5 mi²). 34.9 km² (13.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,064 people, 5,524 households, and 3,756 families residing in the township. The population density is 460.5/km² (1,192.6/mi²). There are 5,641 housing units at an average density of 161.7/km² (418.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 94.28% White, 3.08% African American, 0.03% Native American, 1.71% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,524 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.05. In the township the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 28.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 84.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.1 males. The median income for a household in the township is $62,949, and the median income for a family is $77,649. Males have a median income of $54,495 versus $39,792 for females. The per capita income for the township is $29,418. 2.5% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line.
