Midden-drentheMidden-Drenthe is a municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. Population centres Balinge, Beilen, Bovensmilde, Brunsting, Bruntinge, Drijber, Elp, Eursinge, Garminge, Hijken, Hijkersmilde, Holthe, Hoogersmilde, Hooghalen, Laaghalen, Laaghalerveen, Lieving, Makkum, Mantinge, Nieuw-Balinge, Oranje, Orvelte, Smilde, Spier, Westerbork, Wijster, Witteveen, Zuidveld and Zwiggelte. Beilen Beilen is a village situated at the heart of the municipality Midden-Drenthe. The old Reformed church is the only really old building; a huge fire destroyed the major part of Beilen in 1820. Hooghalen Hooghalen is the village near where the deportation camp Westerbork was located during World War II. There is a museum and several memorials to those transported. Orvelte The small village of Orvelte presents itself as a museum village. There is a saw mill, a blacksmith and a wooden shoe maker, all open to the public. In Orvelte live less than a 100 people. Westerbork The village of Westerbork gives its name to the Westerbork deportation and later, concentration camp, located about 7 km north of the village, in the forests of Hooghalen. The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) array was installed near the site of the camp in 1969. External link
