Metro Radio is a local radio station broadcasting in North East England. Its output is mainly contemporary pop and dance music however it is also popular for its football commentary on the two major local teams Sunderland and Newcastle Utd. Its main studio is in Gateshead, near to the Metro Centre. Metro has a sister station on medium wave, Magic 1152 Alan Robson has presented the weekday late night phone in for two decades. They also sponsor the MetroRadio Arena, formerly the Telewest Arena. James Whale launched his radio career on Metro, presenting on the station between 1974 and 1980. Launched on the 15th July 1974, Metro Radio broadcasts on four frequencies including 97.1 and 103 to a potential audience of 1.4million. Metro Radio has won many awards including the Sony Radio Gold Award for Sport, a finalist award for Creative Services at the New York awards and Station Of The Year at the EMAP radio awards.
