Meta-information

Meta-information is information that defines information. Meta-information turns up in many places, especially in computer data. Some examples of files with meta-information are:
  • MP3 files can contain ID v1 or ID v2 tags generally intended to contain information about a song, such as the title, artist, album, year, track number, genre, etc.
  • Video files, such as MPEG and AVI can have similar tags.
  • In HTML, the tag is used by search engines to index the page's topic.
