Mersey Tunnels Police

The Mersey Tunnels Police has the unusual remit of policing the Mersey Tunnels, approach roads, and marshalling areas. Generally it deals with driving offences committed in it's area of jurisdiction, and also assists the Merseyside Police with drug operations. In 2003, the Merseyside coroner ruled that two teenagers who died when the stolen car they were travelling in crashed into a road block set up by the tunnels police were unlawfully killed. The coroner recommended either the policing of the tunnel should be transferred to Merseyside Police, or tunnel officers (currently appointed by the Merseyside Passanger Transport Authority) should be trained to national policing standards.
