Mephisto (Comics)Mephisto (short for Mephistopheles) is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics' universe. He is an extradimensional demon of unknown origin. He has often claimed to be, or been mistaken for, Biblical Satan or another legendary devil. Mephisto first appeared in Silver Surfer volume 1 #3 (1968), by Stan Lee and Sal Buscema. He has since come into conflict with numerous superheroes and mystical heroes. Mephisto has a demonic son named Blackheart and a daughter named Mephista. Blackheart once slew Mephisto and took control of his "Hell", although Mephisto was later returned to life. Mephisto has claimed to have been created by the omnipotent being that eventually became the Infinity Gems, although Doctor Strange Annual #3 (1993) claimed that Mephisto and a number of other major demons were created from the essence of another primordial demon. He has sponsored a number of Satanic cults and Faustian deals over the centuries. He is the patron of the "Techno-Wizards" of Mys-Tech. In the 1970s, he assumed the guise of "Satan" and created the Ghost Rider by bonding the demon Zarathos to motorcyclist Johnny Blaze. In the 1980s, he became aware of the presence of the omnipotent Beyonder on the Earth, and attempted to corrupt or kill that being; he ultimately failed, and the Beyonder survived his apparent death at the hands of the Silver Surfer. Mephisto starred in a miniseries, Mephisto Versus..., in which the battled The Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and several other Marvel heroes. At the conclusion of his battle with the Fantastic Four, Mephisto's soul was fragmented by Franklin Richards. The fragments were subsequently drawn into the body of the Scarlet Witch, who had unknowingly summoned the soul fragments in an attempt to use magic to concieve children with her husband, the android Vision. Mephisto's frgamented soul became a pair of infant twins who were ultimately absorbed back into Mephisto's essence. He was briefly partnered with Thanos while the latter held the Infinity Gauntlet, but ultimately fought Thanos alongside a number of other cosmic entities. In the Hellcat miniseries, Daimon Hellstrom claimed Mephisto, Satannish and Dormammu as relatives, although this claim was later refuted in the Marvel Encyclopedia: Marvel Knights. Superhuman Powers Mephisto possesses vast supernatural power, which is apparently inherent within him. He can use this magical energy for various effects, among which are the augmentation of his own physical strength, levitation, teleportation, the projection of mystical energy as force blasts, invisibility, matter manipulation, image projection, size transformation of his body or other objects or beings, the creation of temporary interdimensional apertures, and so on. There seems to be no single feat beyond Mephisto's capabilities, with two exceptions: the subjugation of any sentient being's will to his own without that being's deliberate submission, and the reading of a sentient being's thoughts. Mephisto also possesses certain powers enabling him to capture and detain the astral bodies (sheaths of the soul) of recently deceased human beings. Mephisto does not have jurisdiction over all the souls of humanity's recently deceased. It is not yet known what the prerequisite conditions are for him to be able to manipulate a human soul, nor are the precise means by which he accomplishes the feat known. Apparently these conditions require that the human being in question willingly agree o submit to Mephisto's will. It is not known how a human being may free himself from bondage to Mephisto, nor whether Mephisto will forever retain control of the souls he has obtained. Nor is it known whether or not Mephisto feeds on the psychic energies of such souls as other demons do. Apparently Mephisto can entrap a living human being within his realm through sheer physical force, even if the person did not submit his or her will to him. As a demon, Mephisto is functionally immortal and beyond such human needs as food, air, and sleep. His body appears to be composed of some supernatural substance that is more durable and resilient than human flesh and tissue. Quotations - "The greatest joy in doing evil is to be rewarded by the sight of those who suffer its consequence!"
