MentholMenthol is a covalent organic compound obtained from peppermint oil or other mint oils or made synthetically. It is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color, which is solid at room temperature and melts slightly above. The isopropyl group is stereochemically of trans- orientation to both the methyl and alcohol groups. Menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities. It is contained in non-prescription products for short-term relief of minor sore throat and minor mouth or throat irritation. Menthol is also contained in combination products used for relief of muscle aches, sprains, and similar conditions. It is also used as an additive in certain cigarette brands, both for flavor and to reduce the throat and sinus irritation caused by smoking. Currently no reported nutrient or herb interactions involve menthol. People using combination products that include menthol are advised to review the other ingredients for possible herb and/or nutrient interactions. Menthol is considered an antidote for many homeopathic remedies and should be avoided by people taking them. Though not commonly thought of as a toxin, menthol is actually quite toxic, causing cardiac arrhythmia in doses as small as a teaspoon. Note that to consume a teaspoon of menthol one would have to take 715 mentholated cough drops (Halls brand, or most store brands), and that the link between cardiac arrhythmia and menthol is only applicable when taking this quantity of menthol every day as a dietary supplement.
