Menke's Syndrome

Menke's syndrome, also called as the kinky hair disease, is a disease of abnormal copper metabolism. The patients have brittle hair and metaphyseal widening. Also called as the Menke's kinky hair syndrome. It is a X-linked recessive disorder, therefore males have the disease, while the females are carriers.

Incidence

About 1 in 30,000.

Symptoms

  • mental retardation
  • brittle hair

Prognosis

Prognosis is poor, with death occurring in early childhood.

Treatment

  • copper injections in form of acetate salts.
