Memin

Memin is a weekly comic magazine from Mexico. It has been produced continuously since 1983 and it contains comedy and soap opera elements. Memin tells the story of a very poor, Black boy (Memin) and his group of friends, composed by Carlangas; a street-wise curly haired boy who was abandoned by his millionare father and who was raised by his working class mother, Ernestillo, whose mother died when he was young and he has since been raised by his alcoholic, carpenter father, and Ricardo, a son of millionares who does not lack much. All of Memins characters have different characteristics that set them apart:
  • Memin, the one who always has hopes that things will improve and who gets the group involved in comical situations, in addition of being the owner of several funny phrases
  • Carlangas, who likes to solve things with his fist and rarely shows fear
  • Ernestillo, the intelligent and hard working one
  • Ricardo, the rich boy who has travelled around the world
Although Memin is a comedy comic, it resembles soap operas in that the comic's story is a continuous one. Every week, the newest publication of Memin begins where the last publication had left off. In addition, because of the elements involved in the comic magazine's story, such as poverty, parental abandonment, death and alcoholism, there are dramatic moments in the magazine often. Memin, apart from Mexico, has been a popular magazine in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, Chile and Panama, among other countries. Memin was a creation of famed writer Yolanda Vargas Dulche, and currently, there are talks about making a movie based on the magazine and its characters.
