, one of the pioneers of
old school hip hop
as a member of
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five
with his brother
Kid Creole
. Mel,
ghostwriter
of some of Flash's lyrics, became the leader of the group in
1983
, after Flash and Kid Creole left The Furious Five and
Sugar Hill Records
for
Elektra Records
. The group continued as
Grandmaster Melle Mel & the Furious Five
; among their most important recordings were the single "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" and "I Feel For You", a collaboration with
Chaka Khan
that helped expose hip-hop to mainstream audiences.
