Media In South AfricaSouth African Media is free and flourishing. There are 19 daily and 10 weekly newspapers, most of which are printed in English. Some South African press openly criticised the Apartheid goverment, while some did not, however after the end of apartheid in 1994, the press is currently free to talk about any subject without censorship. The Constitution of South Africa has a Bill of Rights that guarantees that every citizen has the right to freedom expression, which includes freedom of the press and media, the freedom to receive or impart information or ideas, freedom of artistic creativity, academic freedom, and freedom of scientific research. South Africa has 19 daily newspapers, and 10 weekly newspapers, most of which are published in English however several are published either entirely in Afrikaans or have Afrikaans-language suppliments. There are several independelt-owned newspapers, however the majority are owned by four large publishing groups: Jonnic Publishing, Nasionale Media, New Africa Publications, and CTP/Caxton. Television Broadcasting in South Africa is regulated by ICASA, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa. Broadcast rights, especially for television, are issued by invitation only and only two independent television broadcasters are permitted to operate. Broadcast licenses mandate percentages of local, community and educational content and broadcasters are required to include such content as a condition of ther license. There are 4 free-to-air terrestrial television channels in South Africa, SABC 1, 2, 3 and e.tv. The SABC is short for South African Broadcasting Corporation, a state-owned public broadcaster funded by a mandatory television license. Multichoice is the only provider of pay TV and satellite broadcasting in the country, with one terrestrial pay TV channel, M-Net, and DStv, a digital satellite television network with about 50 local and international channels.
