Media Accountability

Media accountability is a phrase that refers to the quite general (especially western) belief that mass media has to be accountable in the publics interest. It's easy to say that media should be accountable, but to whom? And which messages from the media? And how will they be accountable? The views on this matter vary. Several international organizations, like Freedom House, International Press Institute, World Press Freedom Committee and the Inter-American Press Association are globally watching trends in actions of governments to control the press. Also members of the civil society argue that the mass media has not lived up to its responsibility. They include prominent activist Duane Elgin. Also Claude-Jean Bertrand from the University of Paris has written on this matter. Media acountability is related to the more subjective concept of media responsibility.
