Mealworm

Mealworms are the larval form of darkling beetles (Tenebrio molitor). Mealworms are typically used as a food source for reptile and avian pets. They are also provided to wild birds in bird feeders especially during the nesting season when birds are raising their young and appreciate a ready food supply. Mealworms can be purchased at most pet stores and are also available via mail order and the internet. Mealworms purchased in a pet store are typically sold in a container with bran bedding. Since mealworms are the larval stage of the darkling beetle their natural tendency is eat and grow, moving into the pupa stage and finally becoming adult beetles. To slow down mealworm metabolism hence the growing process, store the larva in a refrigerator or other area that is cool. Mealworms do need moisture so their container should have either a small piece of potato or apple or a slightly damp paper towel will work nicely. Other than a slight odor reminiscent of crickets, mealworms do not stink or otherwise provide an offense.
