May Department Stores

May Department Stores operates 460 department stores, as well as 239 David's Bridal stores, 449 After Hours Formalwear stores, and 10 Priscilla of Boston stores in 46 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The following stores are listed below with the amount of stores and the states in which they're located in. The May company was founded in 1877 by David May in Leadville, Colorado. Its headquarters moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1905, and the company went public in 1911. Mary Livingstone was working as a lingerie salesgirl there when she met her future husband Jack Benny. Later, the department store was used as a setting in his radio and television shows. On February 28, 2005, Federated Department Stores, Inc. announced that they will acquire the May company for $11 billion in stock in a deal that would create the nation's second largest department store chain with over 1,000 stores and $30 billion in annual sales. Eventually, Federated will phase out most of May's regional nameplates to the Macy's or Bloomingdale's name by 2006-2007. Federated will study what to do with the Lord & Taylor and Marshall Field's nameplates.
