Maxim (Saying)

A maxim is a wise saying similar to an aphorism. Theorist of management strategies Henry Mintzberg has a syllogism:
  • Most maxims are obvious
  • Not all maxims are meaningful
  • Some obvious maxims are contradicted by other obvious maxims
Therefore
  • Beware of maxims
(Mintzberg, 1998:92) This could refer to the revised ed. of The Strategy Process (1998), with James Brian Quinn and Sumantra Ghoshal, or to Strategy Safari: A Guided Tour Through the Wilds of Strategic Management (1998)
