Max Vasmer

Max Vasmer (18861962), German linguist.  He has studied problems of etymology of Indo-European, Finno-Ugrian and Turkic languages and worked on history of Slavic, Baltic, Iranian, and Finno-Ugrian peoples in Eastern Europe. One of his most important works is the Etymological dictionary of the Russian language (Russisches Etymologisches Wrterbuch, Heidelberg, 1950-58; Russian translation 1964-73).  Russian version is available online: start here.
