Mauston, Wisconsin

Mauston is a city located in Juneau County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,740. It is the county seat of Juneau County.

Geography

  is located at 43°47'49" North, 90°4'39" West (43.797074, -90.077595). 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²). 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.73% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,740 people, 1,585 households, and 963 families residing in the city. The population density is 394.5/km² (1,022.6/mi²). There are 1,729 housing units at an average density of 182.4/km² (472.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.28% White, 0.67% African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,585 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.89. In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,341, and the median income for a family is $42,866. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $21,589 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,640. 11.9% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
