Matt Freeman

Matt Freeman (born Matthew Freeman c. 1967) plays bass guitar in the punk band Rancid. Freeman was born in Albany, a working class suburb located between Berkeley and El Cerrito. Matt met Tim Armstrong when they were only five years old. They played in little league together and later attended the same high school. They got into punk together when Tim got a tape of punk bands from his older brother. In 1987, Matt and Tim formed the band Operation Ivy. After that, Matt joined the political punk band MDC in 1990. Tim came on board as a roadie. After Operation Ivy's demise in 1991, Freeman and Armstrong recruited Brett Reed and the U.K. Subs' Lars Fredriksen, and the four formed Rancid. Freeman replaced bassist John Maurer in Social Distortion in 2004 and appears on their new album Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll. He's now replaced by the next bassist Brent Harding as of early 2005.
