Mats Wilander

Mats Wilander, born August 22, 1964 in Vxj (Sweden), is a tennis player having won seven Grand Slam titles (Australian Open in 1983, 1984 and 1988, French Open in 1982, 1985 and 1988, and US Open in 1988) and three (?) He officially retired in 1996, now competing occasionally on the senior tour. He coached Marat Safin during the 2001 season. He now lives in Hailey, Idaho, part of the Sun Valley ski resort, with his wife Sonja (nee Mulholland), a South African born model. Since his appointment as Swedish Davis Cup Captain, commutes from there. In the 1982 Davis Cup quarter-finals, Wilander lost to John McEnroe in a six-hour-and-22-minute, five-set marathon (7-9, 2-6, 17-15, 6-3, 6-8). It remains the longest Davis Cup match in history. N.B: The longest match in a Grand Slam tournament is 6 hours and 33 minutes, set at the French Open 2004 in a first-round match between Fabrice Santoro and Arnaud Clement.
