It lies to the west of the city of Hamilton. The district encompasses the southern end of the Hauraki Plains and much of the Thames Valley, and is bounded in the east by the Kaimai Ranges. The rivers Piako and Waihou run through the district. The towns of Matamata, Morrinsville and Te Aroha are all within the district, and the council's seat is at Matamata. The main industry in the region is dairy farming. The 2001 population was 29,469, of whom 6000 lived in Morrinsville, 5900 in Matamata, and 3600 in Te Aroha. External links
