In
1926
he was elected mayor of Montluon.
In
1931
he was deputy to the
French National Assembly
for the
Allier
dpartement
.
From
1936
to
1938
he was
Minister of the Interior
in
Lon Blum
's
Popular Front
's government. He fought far-right violent organizations such as the
Cagoule
.
In
1938
he was elected
senator
for the Allier.
In
1940
he was among the minority of parliamentarians refusing to grant full powers to Marshall
Philippe Ptain
. Ptain's
Vichy France
regime had him arrested, and imprisoned.
In
1941
he was brought under
house arrest
in Montlimar, where he was murdered by Cagoule followers.
