Martin VahlMartin Vahl (1749 - 1804) was a Norwegian botanist. He was born in Bergen, studied botany at Copenhagen and in Uppsala under Carolus Linnaeus. Edited Flora Danica. and lectured at the Botanical Garden of Copenhagen from 1779 to 1782. Made a research tour of Europe and North Africa between 1783 and 1785. Became professor at the Society for Natural History ("Naturhistorie Selskabet") in Copenhagen in 1786 and was a full professor at the University of Copenhagen between 1801 and 1804. The standard botanical author abbreviation Vahl is applied to species he described.
