Martha BeckDr. Martha Beck is a sociologist, therapist, and best-selling writer. She contributes regularly to Oprah Winfrey's O magazine. Her father was prominent LDS scholar Hugh Nibley. Before her break with the LDS Church, Beck co-authored Breaking the Cycle of Compulsive Behavior with her husband, John, in 1990. A large portion of the book dealt with overcoming homosexual behaviors. The two have since divorced and both are now openly gay. Beck is the mother of three children, one of who inspired her to write her 2002 book Expecting Adam. She has since written Finding Your Own North Star and The Joy Diet. Her most recent book, Leaving the Saints: How I Lost the Mormons and Found My Faith, (released in March of 2005) is a controversial narrative in which Beck describes using self-hypnosis to recover memories of sexual abuse by her father. http://www.azcentral.com/ent/arts/articles/0225Mormon-Memoir-ON-CP.html. According to a personal interview with Beck referenced in a book review by Sunstone, the book was originally written as a novel, loosely based on her life (with the main character being male) but was changed to reflect her "memoirs" at the encouraging of her publishers. Each of Martha Beck's seven siblings has signed a statement denouncing the book, and stating that the facts surrounding it are false and misleading. Additionally, Beck's siblings have also hired a psychologist and lawyer who has been involved in lawsuits against therapists who practice recovered-memory therapy.
