Marjan

Marjan was a lion at the Kabul Zoo in Kabul Afghanistan who was maimed in a grenade attack. As the story goes, in 1993 a Mujahideen soldier climbed into Marjan's enclosure to show off and Marjan killed him. Soon after, a friend of the dead soldier threw a grenade at Marjan which cost the lion an eye. During the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan Marjan gained some noteriety as a particularly pitiable denizen of the Kabul zoo, the abandonment of which is remeniscent of what occurred in the Kuwait City Zoo during the first Gulf War, where many animals starved to death unattended. In the aftermath of the invasion of Kabul, the zoo animals were seen to by a number of international animal protection and zoological societies. Marjan died in reasonable health in January of 2002. Note: Marjan is also a common name in slavic countries.
