Marion, Virginia

Marion is a town located in Smyth County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,349. It is the county seat of Smyth County.

Geography

Marion is located at 36°50'13" North, 81°30'59" West (36.836953, -81.516483). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.7 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.7 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,349 people, 2,647 households, and 1,614 families residing in the town. The population density is 590.7/km² (1,528.3/mi²). There are 2,865 housing units at an average density of 266.6/km² (689.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.98% White, 5.94% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,647 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% are married couples living together, 14.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.76. In the town the population is spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $25,609, and the median income for a family is $34,257. Males have a median income of $27,960 versus $22,027 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,372. 18.6% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
