Mario BiaggiMario Biaggi (born October 26, 1917) is a former American politician. A former police officer, Biaggi later became a senior partner in a law firm in his native New York City. In 1968, Biaggi ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat and won easily in his district, located in overwhelmingly Democratic Bronx County. He was re-elected in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1980, 1982, 1984, and 1986. In 1988, Biaggi was convicted of racketeering, extortion, bribery, mail fraud, and for filing false tax returns. The charges were among those brought against many political and business figures in the Wedtech scandal. Biaggi resigned from Congress in August of 1988, before he could be expelled. After serving two years in prison for his assorted crimes, Biaggi ran for the Democratic nomination for his former seat in 1992, but was easily defeated.
