established the base on the
Pacific Ocean
coast north of

to train U.S. Marines for service in

. The base is named after Marine General
Joseph Henry Pendleton
, who long advocated setting up a West Coast training base for the Marine Corps. The
Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores
was the largest in California, over 200 square miles, and originally belonged to the family of
Pio Pico
, changing hands until the Marine Corps takeover. The
Las Flores Adobe
was built in
1867
and is an example of the
Monterey style
that blends
Mexican
adobe
with certain
New England
architectural elements. It is currently administered by the
Boy Scouts of America
and is a
National Historic Landmark
.
