Mariah Carey
(1990)
Emotions
(1991)
Mariah Carey is the first album by the singer of the same title. It was released in May 1990. Her debut album was a huge success selling 9 million copies alone in the US and twice that figure worldwide. It hit the top of the Billboard 200 and peaked at #6 in the UK albums chart. Whilst not establishing her as a massive act in the UK, as she received fame there in the later half of her career, she became a superstar practically overnight. The album was mainly filled with pop songs, either powerful and emotional ballads such as her debut single "Vision Of Love" and the melancholy "I Don't Wanna Cry" or songs with a more dance-based style such as "Someday". The album produced 4 hit singles in the US, with "Vision Of Love", "Love Takes Time", "Someday" & "I Don't Wanna Cry" all hitting the top of the Hot 100, making her the second artist in US chart history to have their first 4 songs all go to the top of the Hot 100, with the Jackson 5 being the first. She would later exceed this record with her second album, Emotions. The singles from the album faired less well in the UK; "Vision Of Love" managed to settle into the Top 10, peaking at #9, whereas "Love Takes Time" and "Someday" barely made the Top 40 peaking at #37 and #38 respectively. Special release only for the UK, "There's Got To Be A Way", failed to make the Top 40 peaking at #49. Despite having increasing success until the middle of the 90's, this was her most successful album based on sales and chart performance until her 1993 release, Music Box.
