Marchesi Marchesi The Marchesi are a family most notably found in Spain (Galicia), although originally from Bologna, in Italy. Their ancestry can be traced to participation in the first crusade (1095), with few contestations. Since the mid-19th century, the family have been based in Spain, having left Bologna shortly after Camillo di Cavour unified Italy. The last Marchesi to be born in Italy became the first foreign-born Mayor of a Spanish city (La Corua). During his tenure he commissioned the main square (Plaza Maria Pita), the Town Hall (El Ayuntamiento), and invested heavily in the harbours and fisheries, then La Corua's primary industry. There is a street named in his honour (Calle Alcalde Marchesi) in the centre of the city. Recent prominent Marchesi family members include the three brothers Bruno Marchesi, who fought with the Division Azul on the Russian front, Jose Maria Marchesi, a Knight of the Order of Malta, and Emilio Marchesi, a prominent entrepreneur and director of Campsa. More recently still, Antonio Oyarzabal Marchesi is currently serving as Spanish Ambassador to the US following a long and distinguished career in the Spanish diplomatic service, Javier Ozores Marchesi (Count of Priegue), a prominent film producer, novelist and food critic, and Pilar Marchesi, who brought women rally drivers to the fore in the late 60's and early 70's, winning national stages against the best men around and being instrumental in the early training of Carlos Sainz (the most successful rally driver in history).
