Maplewood, New JerseyMaplewood is a township located in Essex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 23,868. Geography Maplewood is located at 40°43'44" North, 74°16'6" West (40.728901, -74.268213). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.8 mi²). 10.0 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,868 people, 8,452 households, and 6,381 families residing in the township. The population density is 2,393.6/km² (6,207.1/mi²). There are 8,615 housing units at an average density of 864.0/km² (2,240.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 58.78% White, 32.63% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.86% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.56% from other races, and 4.01% from two or more races. 5.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,452 households out of which 40.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.27. In the township the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males. The median income for a household in the township is $79,637, and the median income for a family is $92,724. Males have a median income of $57,572 versus $41,899 for females. The per capita income for the township is $36,794. 4.4% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Community Maplewood prides itself on being a diverse and family-friendly community. In a number of surveys it is ranked among the most desireable places to live in the United States. The township has a downtown area known as "the village" with its own movie theater, several upscale and midscale restaurants, a small supermarket, independent caf, two liquor stores, a small bookstore, and more nail salons than the town should be able to support.
