Manomin County, Minnesota

MANOMIN COUNTY, MINNESOTA A very small county--about 18 square miles. The present southward extension of Anoka County between Hennepin and Ramsey was the entire area of Manomin. Manomin is a variant spelling of a Chippewa word for "wild rice" a staple of their diet (see Mahnomen County, Minnesota). Created 1857 from Ramsey County, May 23; county seat Manomin (present Fridley). Deorganized 1858 and administratively attached to St. Louis County. Attached to Anoka County 1860; population 136. Attached to Hennepin County 1863. Merged into Anoka County and eliminated 1869 REFERENCES
