Majlis Bachao TehreekMajlis Bachao Tehreek (Save Majlis Movement), an Islamic political party in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. MBT was founded by Mohammed Amanullah Khan as a split from All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimen. Khan formed MBT in 1993 after coming into conflict with the AIMIM leader Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi. The controversy concerned issues such as the Babri Masjid issue. The stronghold of MBT is the Muslim areas in Hyderabad. Khan was elected five times to the Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly. He represented the Chandrayangutta between 1978 and 1994. Four times he was elected as an AIMIM candidate and in 1994 as a MBT candidate. In 1999 he ran as a MBT candidate, but was defeated. Mohammed Amanullah Khan died on November 10 2002. After his death the Urdu newspaper Munsif published a critical article. That led Khan's son, Amjadullah Khan Khalid, to lead a mob and attack the newspaper. The attack received attention in the media and was condemned by Reporters without Borders. In Lok Sabha election 2004 MBT launched another son of Khan, Majidullah Khan, in the Hyderabad constituency (as a countercandidate against the AIMIM candidate Asaduddin Owaisi). Khan received 47 560 votes (4,78% of the votes in that constituency). Most of the votes came from the Chandrayangutta area, were Khan got 28 746 votes (20,6% of the votes in that area). MBT has two out of a hundred seats in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Amjadullah Khan is one of the corporators. In the Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly elections 2004. MBT had launched seven candidates, out of whom five contested against AIMIM candidates. No MBT candidate was elected. MBT oppose U.S. occupation of Iraq. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, member of the legislative assembly on behalf of AIMIM, was a member of MBT until 1999. Whereas AIMIM tries to distance themselves from their origin in the Nizam days and their connections to the Razakars, MBT has openly commemorated the Razakar leader Qasim Razvi. External links
