MahmueiMahmuei (or it can be written in English as Mahmooie or Mahmuie) is a village in Shakhent rural subdistrict, Darmiyn district, of Birjand town in Khorasan province in Iran. It is on the road between Birjand and Qyen. Its climate is warm and dry. According to the natives, the village owes its name to its location. The first settlers named the village Mahme because it was in an open and flat ground. In any case, etymology of name Mahmuei is unknown. Its geographical features(1&4) are: altitude: 1775 m above sea level longitude: 59˚ 21 N latitude: 33˚ 30 E Mahmuei had a population of 929 people in 1918 and 1467 people in 1938 and according to the census of 1996 (1375) it has a population of 695 people, including 185 houses and 223 families. Peaple are Shi`ite Muslims speaking a local dialect of Persian. Most of the population is engaged in agriculture. Sheep and goats are reared in abundance. Since 1950, many peaple emigrated from Mahmuei to city areas, specially to Tehran and Mashad. Many of these emigrants gather in the village in Islamic lunar month "Moharram" specially on the 9th and 10th, when ceremony of passion play (Ta'zeh or Shabh-khn) is performed. There is a shrine in the villages cemetery where a pious man was buried about 70 years ago. The natives respect the shrine and dedicate money to it for obtaining their wants. The pious man, known as qye Mr-Abbss, was a descendant of The Prophet (Seyyed). One day about 80 years ago, at the time of making grape syrup (shre-ye angoor) via boiling grape juice, somebody told to him you are not a descendant of The Prophet. Mr-Abbss was annoyed. He took off his dresses and went into the huge fire that was lighted for boiling grape juices. It is said that the fire has been lighting for three days without break. He sat in the midst of the fireplace (Golkhan) to prove miraculously that he was a descendant of The Prophet. He stayed in the fireplace for a while and didnt go out till some villagers entreated him to go out. After that event, the villagers believed and respected him and built a monument on his grave. Major products of Mahmuei are Saffsron (Za`fern) and Barberry (Zereshk) that are cultivated for exporting. Beet and wheat are cultivated too. Some kinds of fruits such as grape, black plume, apricot, melon, watermelon, almond and pistachio are produced for local use. Before 1950, opium plant was cultivated. Before digging the first deep well not earlier than 20 years ago, dry farming was the only agricultural method that was exercised. Besides a string of underground aqueduct (Qant) in Mahmuei which has been the main water resource of the village in the past both for householding and for irrigating, there are two networks of piped water for householding and 23 electric and diesel deep wells for irrigating the fields now. Qant is still in use. Modern facilities of Mahmuei are electicity network (since 1986), health-care house, telephone (just one line since 1996,tel: +98 056 2533 -3400), drinking piped water (since 1998), unrefined piped water, asphalted road, rural cooperative,Islamic council, an elementary school and a boarding middle school. It is worth to notice that there is another village called Mahmuei located at 59˚ 14 N & 33˚ 44 E, 1435 m above sea level. It has been recorded in some sources as Mahmuni. It is smaller than above-mentioned Mahmuei. See home page of Mahmuei village herehttp://jamali.8k.com/mahmuei/
