Magical GirlfriendMagical girlfriend (魔法彼女, mahou kanojo) is a genre of romantic comedy anime series, usually synonymous with being a bishoujo series. The characters and designs have many similarities with harem anime, with some exceptions. One interesting observation is that most male leads in Magical Girlfriend series are older than in typical harem anime, typically in the late teens to adulthood. The most famous Magical Girlfriend in the west is likely Belldandy of Oh My Goddess. More recent examples include Shaolin of Mamotte Shugogetten and, arguably, Chii of Chobits. Ironically, the genre is said to ultimately have its origins in Japanese fandoms for the American sitcoms Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. Features Magical girlfriends typically have unusual powers compared to normal people, although not neccesarily magical ones (android nanotechnology for example). Magical girlfriends are also known for their dedication to whatever work they do and whoever they have great affection for, although depending on the character's actual talents this can range from anything from a capable and skilled 'wife' type woman to a well-meaning but clumsy, bumbling wannabe girlfriend. They are usually considered emotionally insightful, seeing the good in others when most wouldn't and forgiving their shortcomings. Predictably, many magical girlfriends are criticized for being personifications of a predominantly male audience's ideal mate, usually implying a lack of depth outside that character's service to others.
