Maelstrom (Role Playing Game)

Maelstrom is a role playing game by Alexander Scott, published in 1984 by Puffin Books. It is a historical game set in 16th century England.

Magic System

As befits 16th century historical England the magic system is very subtle. Although wizards are not directly restricted in what they can do, the power required to do so varies according to how "implausible" or out of the ordinary the action is. For example, since fireballs very infrequently appear out of nowhere, it ends up being prohibitively expensive to create one. But if two people are fighting on a slippery parapet in the rain, it is not so very hard to make one of them slip and fall to their death. There are, of course, a wealth of role playing opportunities in such a role. Since the essence of effective magic is making small tweaks of fortune, it is easy for other people to believe that you have no power at all!
