Maeikiai DistrictMaeikiai district (liet. k. Maeikių rajonas) is in north-west Lithuania, on the Venta river (Teliai County). The administrative center of Maeikiai district is the town of Maeikiai. Territory 1220.2 km, of which 32 km are towns and settlements, 22 km - industrial enterprises and roads, 614 km - agricultural lands, 273 km - forests, and 68 km - tracts of other designation. There is one urban subdistrict and 8 rural ones. Population in 2003 was 67.393, 46.223 live in towns and 21.170 - in villages. The territory is periphery of two Baltic nations - Lithuanians and Latvians. In the north Maeikiai region borders on the Republic of Latvia, in the east - on Akmenė region, in the southeast - on Teliai region, in the southwest - on Plungė region, and in the west - on Skuodas region. The territory of the Maeikiai district stretches from west to east for 43.5 km, while from north to south - for 38 km. The utmost end in the west is Petraičiai village, in the east - Kalnikiai and Pakliaupė villages. The northernmost village is Giniočiai, while the southernmost one is Pasruojė. Maeikiai region is one of the most populous administrative regions, where the density of populiation is 59 people per 1 km (57 - in Lithuania). The region is crossed by important railway lines: Liepāja (Republic of Latvia) - iauliai - Kaunas - Vilnius and Riga (Republic of Latvia) - Maeikiai - Klaipėda. Nature Cultural Heritage
