Madison County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 12,520. Its county seat is Madison ⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 833 km² (322 mi²). 832 km² (321 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 12,520 people, 4,739 households, and 3,521 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 5,239 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.71% White, 11.41% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,739 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 21.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,856, and the median income for a family is $44,857. Males have a median income of $30,805 versus $24,384 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,636. 9.60% of the population and 6.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.70% of those under the age of 18 and 10.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
