Its county seat is London6 and is named for James Madison, President of the United States when the county was erected in 1810. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,207 km² (466 mi²). 1,205 km² (465 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water. The racial makeup of the county is 91.75% White, 6.24% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 13,672 households out of which 35.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 22.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.06. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 32.80% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 117.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.30 males.
