Machias (Town), MaineMachias is a town located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,353. Located on the Machias River in southeast Maine, it was settled in 1763. Machias is home to Burnham Tavern, a historical museum which has mementos of the first naval battle of the American Revolution. This battle, in June 1775, in Machiasport led to the capture of a British ship. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 38.3 km² (14.8 mi²). 36.0 km² (13.9 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.09% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,353 people, 939 households, and 503 families residing in the town. The population density is 65.4/km² (169.4/mi²). There are 1,129 housing units at an average density of 31.4/km² (81.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.92% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.98% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 939 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.3% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.4% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.75. In the town the population is spread out with 18.9% under the age of 18, 20.4% from 18 to 24, 21.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $24,318, and the median income for a family is $36,705. Males have a median income of $29,107 versus $21,538 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,902. 23.5% of the population and 15.6% of families are below the poverty line.
