Machias is a census-designated place located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,376.

Geography

Machias is located at 44°42'48" North, 67°27'39" West (44.713404, -67.460834). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²). 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.47% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,376 people, 613 households, and 291 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 212.5/km² (550.6/mi²). There are 735 housing units at an average density of 113.5/km² (294.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.15% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 1.31% Native American, 1.82% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 613 households out of which 23.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.1% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 52.5% are non-families. 44.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.00 and the average family size is 2.76. In the CDP the population is spread out with 19.3% under the age of 18, 13.3% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 80.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.6 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $21,250, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $30,417 versus $21,705 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,780. 23.8% of the population and 15.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.1% of those under the age of 18 and 23.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
