Lyric

Lyric can have a number of meanings.
  • A lyric (from the Greek) is a song sung with a lyre. Now, it is commonly used to mean a song of no defined length or structure.
  • A lyric poem is one that expresses a subjective, personal point of view. It is usually rather light and fanciful often following a set pattern. The word is rooted in the word lyre, the implication being that the lyric poem is suitable for singing with a lyre, although the modern use of the expression "lyric poetry" is separate from the term "lyrics", which are, indeed, the words set to music.
An example of a lyric poem:
I would be the Lyric Ever on the lip, Rather than the Epic Memory lets slip. —Thomas Bailey Aldrich
  • Lyrics are the written words in a song.
  • Lyric is a classification of the human voice in classical singing. The adjective describes a quality and range at the upper end of the given voice part, e.g. lyric soprano.
  • Lyric is a commonly used name for RTE Lyric FM
