Lumberton, North Carolina

Lumberton is a city located in Robeson County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,795. It is the county seat of Robeson County. Lumberton, located in southern North Carolina, is located on the Lumber River. It experienced most of its growth shortly after World War II.

Geography

Lumberton is located at 34°37'38" North, 79°0'43" West (34.627239, -79.011947). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.9 km² (15.8 mi²). 40.7 km² (15.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,795 people, 7,827 households, and 5,165 families residing in the city. The population density is 510.8/km² (1,322.4/mi²). There are 8,800 housing units at an average density of 216.1/km² (559.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 48.54% White, 35.44% African American, 12.79% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.18% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 3.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,827 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 23.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.01. In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,782, and the median income for a family is $33,839. Males have a median income of $28,903 versus $24,503 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,504. 25.9% of the population and 23.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.4% of those under the age of 18 and 23.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
