Luigi PalmieriLuigi Palmieri (April 22, 1807 - September 9 1896) was an Italian physicist and meteorologist. Biography He was born at Faicchio, Benevento, Italy. He died at Naples, Italy. Palmieri made observation of the eruptions on Mount Vesuvius. He also researched earthquakes and meteorological phenomena. Palmieri received a degree in architecture from the University of Naples. In 1845, Palmieri was the professor of physics at the Royal Naval School at Naples. In 1847, Palmieri was the chair of physics at the university. In 1848, he began working at the meteorological observatory on Mount Vesuvius. By 1854, Palmieri was the observatory director. Using a seismometer for the detection and measurement of ground tremors, Palmieri was able to detect very slight movements and to predict the eruption of volcanos. Using a modified Peltier electrometer, he researched atmospheric electricity. He developed a modified Morse telegraph. He imporved the anemomete and pluviometer.
