Lucius Bentinck Cary, 10Th Viscount FalklandLucius Bentinck Cary, Tenth Viscount Falkland (1803-1884) succeeded to the title after the death of his father in a duel in 1809. He was a Scottish reformer and was elected to the House of Lords as a Scottish representative peer in 1831 and was created a Baron in the peerage of the United Kingdom. Cary became governor of Nova Scotia in 1840 after the recall of Sir Colin Campbell. Cary opposed the movement led by Joseph Howe for responsible government leading to Howe threatening to horsewhip him. Cary restructured the colony's Executive Council by including reformers in the body which had previously been a Tory domain but he resisted the demand that the majority party in the legislature be permitted to from a government. Cary's term ended in 1846 and he became captain of the Yeoman Guard from 1846 to 1848 and then governor of Bombay. He returned to England in 1853 and served as a magistrate in Yorkshire.
