Luciano Bottaro

Luciano Bottaro is humoristic cartoonist, born in Rapallo (Genova) on November 16 1931. He is considered as the most important italian humoristic cartoonist. His characteristic style is appreciated in all Europe, where there are many countries that edite its comics: France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, ex-Yugoslavia, but also Argentina, Australia, Brasil. Influenced by Messmer, McCay, Opper, Dirks, Barks and Gottfredson, he has developed a most personal caricatural style: often he deforms the somatic characteristics of his characters, obtaining psychedelic effects.

Biography

He began his career for Lo Scolaro, an italian magazine, in 1949, with the character Arcibaldo il bucaniere. He has collaborated with La Domenica del Corriere, Edizioni Alpe and Mondadori, the italian Disney editor: his first story was Paperino e le onorificenze written by Alberto Testa and published in 1952. In the same year he began to collaborate with Guido Scala and Franco Aloisi, to which Carlo Chendi, scriptwriter, joined subsequently: it born the un-official Rapallo's School, antechamber to the birth of the Bierrec Studios.

Bierrec Studios

Besides the work on Disney's characters, he worked on other magazines, creating a lot of characters (Baldo, Pepito, Pon Pon, Gi Polpetta, Maramao), and in 1958 he founded the Bierrec Stdios with Carlo Chendi and Giorgio Rebuffi. The first Studios' publications was Redipicche, a comic book that published the adventures of the king of the cards, a pitiless and blood-thirsty parody of military world, inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. A lot of cartoonist began to collaborate with them: Maria Luisa Uggetti, Tiberio Colantuoni, Ivo Milazzo, Giancarlo Berardi. They worked on several characters, also Mickey Mouse, Uncle Scrooge, Warner Bros characters, ad so on. They also realized the comic's version of Carosello, an italian television program that, during 1950s and 1960s, piped the first italian spots.
