Luce County, Michigan Luce County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 7,024. Its county seat is Newberry6. In 2002, Newberry was designated as the moose capital of Michigan by the State Legislature. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,952 km² (1,912 mi²). 2,339 km² (903 mi²) of it is land and 2,613 km² (1,009 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 52.76% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,024 people, 2,481 households, and 1,739 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 4,008 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.84% White, 7.52% Black or African American, 5.54% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 3.25% from two or more races. 1.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,481 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.86. In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 124.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 132.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,031, and the median income for a family is $36,359. Males have a median income of $31,427 versus $21,101 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,828. 14.90% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line.
