Lowville (Village), New YorkLowville is a village located in Lewis County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,476. The name is derived form Nicholas Low, an early landowner. The Village of Lowville is within the Town of Lowville. History Silas Stow, an early settler, established himself in Lowville in 1797. Geography Lowville is located at 43°47'11" North, 75°29'15" West (43.786662, -75.487645). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,476 people, 1,403 households, and 882 families residing in the village. The population density is 706.4/km² (1,830.8/mi²). There are 1,588 housing units at an average density of 322.7/km² (836.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.66% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,403 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.99. In the village the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.2 males. The median income for a household in the village is $32,841, and the median income for a family is $42,399. Males have a median income of $31,831 versus $21,422 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,172. 14.9% of the population and 13.9% of families are below the poverty line.
