French
astronomer
. Godin was a member with
Charles Marie de La Condamine
and
Pierre Bouguer
of the expedition sent to
Peru
in 1735 to determine the length of a degree of the
meridian
in the neighbourhood of the
equator
. After completion of the survey he became professor of
mathematics
at
Lima
, and took measurements of the
earthquake
there in 1746. In 1751 he returned to Europe and became president of the College for midshipmen in
Cdiz
. In 1755 he took measurements of the
Lisbon
