Loren SchwartzLoren Schwartz was a minor figure on the music scene in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s. He is said to have been "an assistant at William Morris" (agency) and "a music biz hanger-on". He is known to have been friends with several major figures on the L.A. music scene including Terry Melcher and Van Dyke Parks and it is possibly through Melcher that he met Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson ca. 1964. According to Parks, who met him in 1965, Schwartz's apartment became a gathering place for many musicians in Los Angeles at that time. It is claimed that Schwartz turned Wilson on to marijuana in 1964 and subsequently turned him on to LSD in late 1966. Schwartz and Melcher introduced Parks to Wilson in February 1966, leading to their collaboration on the ill-fated SMiLE project. According to Wilson's 1988 biography Wouldn't It Be Nice, the Wilson family and the other Beach Boys resented Schwartz's growing influence on Brian and the new circle of 'hip' friends Shwartz was introducing him to. They also suspected Schwartz of supplying Brian with marijuana and confronted him about it when they 'raided' his house one day in 1966 and forbade Brian to associate with Schwartz any longer.
