Lorain County, Ohio

Lorain County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 284,664. Its county seat is Elyria6 and is named for the province of Lorraine in France.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,391 km² (923 mi²). 1,276 km² (492 mi²) of it is land and 1,115 km² (431 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 46.64% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 284,664 people, 105,836 households, and 76,201 families residing in the county. The population density is 223/km² (578/mi²). There are 111,368 housing units at an average density of 87/km² (226/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.54% White, 8.50% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.87% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 6.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 105,836 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.08. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $45,042, and the median income for a family is $52,856. Males have a median income of $39,902 versus $26,116 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,054. 9.00% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.90% of those under the age of 18 and 6.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
